During the school year, we ensure campers stay connected to the supportive camp community in several ways:
Community-building reunions take place throughout the school year and are open to all camp alumni. They allow campers to stay connected to the camp community and camp values throughout the school year. Every event is aligned to at least one of our key program areas: Healthy Body, Healthy Heart, or Healthy Mind. Events include a school year kickoff, cooking class, movement class, service day, and summer kickoff.
College Gear Up
To help campers prepare for life after high school, our "College Gear Up" workshops focus on postsecondary planning and preparation. Select camp alumni learn about the college application process, including financial aid, and get one-on-one help with applications, essays, and questions. We also support campers in developing resumes and looking for work.
During the 2015-16 school year, we will pilot a mentorship program sponsored by our Young Professionals Board. The program will match a select group of camp alumni with volunteer mentors, who will meet twice a month throughout the school year to ensure camp alumni are supported year-round.
During the 2014-15 school year, Steve's Camp piloted an enrichment program program at Gotham Professional Arts Academy, one of our partner schools in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The program supported camp alumni in developing their leadership skills through a food justice-oriented curriculum. This programming will continue during the 2015-16 school year, engaging camp alumni as youth leaders and ninth-graders as participants.
